This is the presentation that I put together for the Travel Industry Executive Women's conference in LA today.

Live Your Dash: Make Every Moment Matter- an interview with Linda Ellis on EGG Live!

This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Linda Ellis. The original live interview was 5/31/13.

This episode is #63 of all time in the top 100 shows on Solutionz Live!

Linda Ellis started writing poems as a child, a talent inherited from her Irish grandmother. She spent years working in the corporate world, but after her first poem was shared on a syndicated radio program in 1994, an alternative career began to emerge and she soon came to the realization that her true passion was in creative writing.

She wanted to write something deeper and even more meaningful about the concept of The Dash.  So she wrote a new poem, a sequel to the original. This new inspiration has now blossomed into a 256-page hardcover book filled with original prose, poems and inspirational stories.

Thirty-six lines that have touched millions, Titled simply — The Dash — these 36 lines have touched millions of lives and have literally taken on a life of their own by traveling all over the world. I call it uncomplicated poetry in a complicated world, which became a slogan to describe my inspirational writings and my company, Linda’s Lyrics.

Seal Entrepreneur Series - Part 1 The Compass for Business Survival

Today I am starting a new series on Business Survival. Thanks to my faithful readers who have been patiently listening to my podcasts while I took a short break from writing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

For those that have ever watched movies or TV shows about survival, one of the tools that is most important is the compass.  If you don’t know the direction that you are traveling, it is pretty tough to reach your destination without one.

In 1982 I moved from Denver to Dallas.  For my international readers that are not familiar with either of these places, Denver is flanked on the west by the majestic Rocky Mountains and on the east by very flat plains.  Dallas is one big flat plain.

It took me a little while after I moved to Dallas to realize why I was often disoriented.

In Denver, I didn’t need a physical compass or one in my car (we didn’t have iPhones with a compass app back then).  The mountains were my compass.  If they were on my left, I was going north.  If they were to my back, I was going east.  Simple.

In Dallas, everything looked the same, so the sun became my compass.  But on a cloudy day, that method of navigation failed.

What is your compass in your business?  How do you know you are headed in the right direction?  What are the business metrics and are you achieving them?  Are they visible?

Click here to order Chris Brogan's Book
Today on the plane, I was reading Chris Brogan’s book “The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth” and he recounted a story about baseball, where much ado is made about the number of base hits, errors and steals.  Chris had seen a movie that talked about a team that figured out that all that really matters is getting on base (not how you got there), as that is a pre-requisite to scoring.  Getting on base is the compass.  Once you are on base you can move forward.  But if you strike out and go back to the bench, you don’t ever score.

This is SO true in business and it is essential to surviving everything that you will encounter.  You have to have a plan, or you won't know where you are going and when you have arrived.

Make sure your compass is pointing you in the right direction and that you can move ahead from where you are.

Tomorrow, we'll talk about what makes an entrepreneur a "seal".

Rose Fass is the  founder and CEO of fassforward Consulting Group,  a leading edge  business transformation boutique. Rose works with  executive teams from  fortune 500 companies.

The single factor that determines success or failure in big business today is conversation. Great leaders use public and private conversations to cultivate a common worldview, set standards, and uncover concerns that can undermine the goals of the organization. So what conversations are you, as a leader, having with your organization? Experienced business transformation consultant Rose Fass shows how leaders can avoid a meltdown and instead drive transformation by the way they communicate in a language that all stakeholders can understand.

The Chocolate Conversation takes a light-hearted approach to show how too often we think we're having the same conversation about "dark chocolate," for instance — only to be referring to three different things: milk, white, and bittersweet varieties. Fass helps us establish common ground that leads to an effective discourse for addressing relevance, growth, and productivity.

From the day they first met at Yale Law School, Bill and Hillary were inseparable and combative. As historian William H. Chafe reveals in Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal that dynamic has remained a constant throughout their remarkable political careers.  Always tempestuous, their relationship had as many lows as it did highs, from near divorce to stunning electoral and political successes. “An illuminating glimpse behind the scenes”—Kirkus Reviews.

Head Games: Brain Trauma in Sports; a Public Health Crisis- an interview with Chris Nowinski on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Chris Nowinski. The original live interview was on 1/4/2013.

This episode is #51 of all time in the top 100 shows on Solutionz Live!

Sports Legacy Institute was founded on June 14, 2007, in Boston, Massachusetts, by CEO, Christopher Nowinski and Dr. Robert Cantu in reaction to new medical research indicating that brain trauma in sports had become a public health crisis.

SLI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to solving the concussion crisis in sports and the military through medical research, treatment, and education and prevention.  The initial vision of SLI was to formalize the groundbreaking neuropathological research, which was a necessary first step in developing treatment and a cure.

“Sports” is the first word in our name because our initial work on the long-term effects of brain trauma focused on those sustained in athletic endeavors. The word “legacy” was chosen to inform the families and future donors that the decision to donate would have a far-reaching, permanent, and positive impact.

In his book Head Games, Chris Nowinski tells his remarkable story - how a former Ivy League football player and WWE wrestler fought the NFL and turned his post-concussion syndrome into a successful crusade that has made concussions one of the most important public health issues of our time. The book was recently made into an award-winning documentary.

What we have learned from men like Tom McHale, Wally Hilgenberg, or John Grimsley has changed the world of sports forever, and for the better. SLI will always honor their legacy and contribution to safer sports.

From Self-Made to Secret Millionaire- an interview with Steve Kaplan on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world. The original live interview was on 8/24/12.

This episode is #50 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

In Steve’s world, there is no distinction between achieving success in business and in life. He uses the same success principals that led to his success in the business world to succeed in all areas of his life. Whether it’s becoming a multimillionaire before age thirty, building one of his businesses from start-up to over 350 million with over 1,500 employees, raising a family, gorilla trekking in the Congo, writing bestselling books, co-producing a Broadway play or pursuing other passions and lifelong goals, his exact same principles are put into action.

In his mid-twenties, Steve hit his first big success with a marketing company called SCA. He didn’t have any business mentors or financial backing, so Steve learned on the fly. Possessing street smarts, a ton of passion, a solid work ethic, and of course some luck, Steve lived the trials of the small business owner.

Steve quickly realized that if he were going to make it big, he would need to get a lot of business from Procter & Gamble, the biggest marketing spender in the industry, so he set his sites on P&G. Steve landed his first P&G client, a $10,000 order from Scope Mouthwash. Fast forward 5 years, and Steve was working with over 50 P&G brands and billing them over $25 million per year.

Due to this success approach, he has been able to achieve every goal he’s chased, no matter how big or how difficult. Whether it’s becoming a multimillionaire before age 30, building one of his many successful businesses from start up to over $350 million or becoming a bestselling author.

Steve’s passion turned to helping others achieve the same level of success in life and business as he did. To that end, in 2004, he started Steve Kaplan Inc. where he uses his experiences to assist others.

Today, Steve is the authority on success and achievement whose no-nonsense, hands-on, innovative approach to success has helped empower and teach tens of thousands across the globe. Steve regularly appears on a variety of media (including MSNBC, NBC, CBS and Fox Television) to discuss his experiences and help others achieve success. Steve’s books, products, consulting sessions and keynotes are full of proven tactics, tools, and techniques to help foster success in life and business. Steve toured the nation’s universities on his Bag The Elephant™ Unplugged University Tour where he spoke with students, faculty and administration on success, and how students can better prepare for success in the next phase of their life.

How to Raise $1 Million (or More!) in 10 Bite-Size Steps/ Asking Matters- an interview with Andrea Kihlstedt on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world.

This episode is #48 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Andrea Kihlstedt is well known as a writer, coach and trainer in fundraising.

Many would have you believe that raising $1 million or more is complex, requires countless meetings, an outsized pool of prospects, and the costly aid of a consultant. Andrea Kihlstedt punctures that notion by showing that intelligent board members, volunteers, and staff have within them the skills and common sense to make it happen. Kihlstedt's 10 steps will and won't surprise you. If you have experience, you already know the importance of a campaign's infrastructure: the need to refine your case, identify the right chair, and adhere to the proven sequence of soliciting.

But what WILL surprise you, and where the strength of the book lies, is the fresh way Kihlstedt, herself a consultant with some 27 years of experience, helps you line up your ducks.

Over the past 28 years, her clients have ranged from tiny start-up organizations to large national institutions. She has guided and goaded each of them to create the culture and context that will inspire people to ask.

Break Your Own Rules: How to Change the Patterns of Thinking that Block Women's Paths to Power- an interview with Jill Flynn & Mary Davis Holt on EGG Live!

This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Jill Flynn & Mary Davis Holt The original live interview was 8/31/12.

This episode is #47 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Jill Flynn, M. Ed., is founding partner at Flynn Heath Holt Leadership (FHHL) whose goal is to move women and organizations forward, faster. Mary Davis Holt is a partner at Flynn Heath Holt Leadership (FHHL), an executive coach and keynote speaker on business, women, and leadership.

Women hold just 11 percent of the most senior-level leadership positions in U.S. Corporations—a number that hasn't changed in over 30 years.

How can women break through? Break Your Own Rules distills the six faulty assumptions (or "rules") most women follow that get in the way—then delivers the correlating new rules that promise to clear that path. For example, the old rule of "Focus on Others" must be replaced by "Take Center Stage," "Hard Work Will Get You There" must yield to "Be Politically Savvy." "Play It Safe" must give way to "Play to Win." "Ask Permission" must be replaced by "Proceed Until Apprehended."

This hands-on guide is for women who are ready to transform their assumptions and join the senior ranks of American business.

Co-author, Kathryn Heath (not interviewed) is Managing Partner of Flynn Heath Holt.

The Philanthrocapitalism Revolution- an interview with Matthew Bishop on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world.

This episode is #46 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Matthew Bishop is the US Business Editor and New York Bureau Chief of The Economist.

From Buffett to Bono, how today’s leading philanthropists are revolutionizing the field, using new methods to have a vastly greater impact on the world.

For philanthropists of the past, charity was often a matter of simply giving money away. For the philanthrocapitalists—the new generation of billionaires who are reshaping the way they give—it’s like business. Largely trained in the corporate world, these “social investors” are using big-business-style strategies and expecting results and accountability to match. Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, is leading the way: he has promised his entire fortune to finding a cure for the diseases that kill millions of children in the poorest countries in the world.

In Philanthrocapitalism, Matthew Bishop and Michael Green examine this new movement and its implications. Proceeding from interviews with some of the most powerful people on the planet—including Gates, Bill Clinton, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Bono, among others—they show how a web of wealthy, motivated donors has set out to change the world.

Before joining The Economist, Mr. Bishop was on the faculty of London Business School, where he co-authored three books for the Oxford University Press on subjects ranging from privatization and regulation to corporate mergers. Prior to that, Mr. Bishop was educated at Oxford University.

David Bonbright is founder and Chief Executive of Keystone, who's mission is to improve the effectiveness of social purpose organizations.

Over the past three decades, as a grantmaker and manager with Aga Khan Foundation, Ford Foundation, Oak Foundation, and Ashoka, David has sought to evolve and test innovative approaches to strengthening citizen self-organization for sustainable development as an alternative to prevailing bureaucratic, top-down models of social service delivery and social value creation.

While with the Ford Foundation, he was declared persona non grata by the apartheid government in South Africa. In 1990 he returned to South Africa and entrepreneured the development of key building blocks for civil society, including the first nonprofit internet service provider, the national association of NGOs, the national association of grantmakers, and enabling reforms to the regulatory and tax framework for not-for-profit organisations that were among the first laws passed by the newly elected Mandela government.

They work with them to develop better ways of planning, measuring and reporting social change.
Their analysis provides an in-depth description of the difficulties social organizations face in measuring and reporting their impact.

Charity Case: An Apollo Program for Nonprofits- an interview with Dan Pallotta on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world.

This episode is #44 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Dan Pallotta is a builder of movements and one of the original social entrepreneurs. He is the President and Chief Humanity Officer of Advertising for Humanity, a full service agency of ideas for the humanitarian sector.

Dan Pallotta believes that virtually everything our society has been taught about charity is backwards.

He states that the social sector is denied the ability to grow because of short-sighted demands that it send every short-term dollar into direct services. Yet if the sector cannot grow, it can never match the scale of our great social problems. In the face of this dilemma, the sector has remained silent, defenseless, and disorganized. In Charity Case, Pallotta proposes a visionary solution: a Charity Defense Council to re-educate the public and give charities the freedom they need to solve our most pressing social issues.

Dan is the founder of Pallotta TeamWorks, which invented the multi-day AIDSRides and Breast Cancer 3-Days and changed the fundamental paradigm for civic engagement in and fundraising for important social causes.

The Female Vision: Women's Real Power at Work- an interview with Sally Helgesen on EGG Live!

This episode is #42 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Sally Helgesen, an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, and consultant, is ranked by Leadership Gurus as number 15 in its survey of the world’s most influential leadership experts and cited as one of the top 35 authorities in the field by Leadership Excellence magazine.

Women see the world through a distinctive lens. What they see is defined by what they notice, what they value, and how they connect the dots. The Female Vision is the first book to explore the nature and power of women’s way of seeing.

In the book, co-author Julie Johnson and Sally draw on multiple strands of research to identify the elements that comprise women’s ways of seeing.
* Women’s capacity for broad spectrum and radar-like notice
* Women’s tendency to analyze information in a broader social context
* Women’s emphasis on intrinsic satisfaction rather than abstract measures of achievement

The book sets forth specific ways in which women can draw on their vision to tap their strategic leadership power. The Female Vision is an unprecedented work of research, but it’s also an actionable handbook for women seeking to realize their greatest strengths and for organizations wanting to benefit from what women have to contribute.

Chicke Fitzgerald - I've read her stuff. Does she still consult?

http://www.solutionz.com/clients.html
The short answer is "Yes I do".

Many of you know that I routinely am juggling more than one thing at a time, but I do still take on consulting opportunities.  I'm just way more selective these days.   But I still have an amazing network of resources.

I have been consulting for over 18 years now.  If you want to know who Solutionz has consulted with and what we've done, click on the image.   You may be surprised at the breadth and depth.

Don't worry that we are small.  We have competed head to head with the big guys on multi-million dollar projects and won.    And we do everything on a fixed priced, from the smallest project to the most complex.

What do our customers look like?

You have to really want to grow, differentiate, innovate, lead and leapfrog competition.

Oh and we have to be able to have fun making it happen.

We don't do re-arranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic or endorse your status quo product plan.  We don't confuse motion with action and progress.

If you are interested in a model where there is gainshare on profit improvements or equity on future growth, we are game.  We put our money where our mouth is.

Give us a call.
