One Good Deed: 365 Days of Trying to Be Just a Little Bit Better- an interview with Erin McHugh on Uncommon Giving

The Rock the World Network is a community of uncommon givers. The Uncommon Giving show features the leaders of charities, foundations and corporations rocking our world.

Erin McHugh is a former publishing executive and author of twenty books.

This episode is #29 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Erin McHugh had spent many years doing her share of community work, before the minutiae of daily life eventually kept her too busy for those higher impulses. Then one day she learned a distant relative was actually going to be canonized.

Was this a sign to reevaluate her priorities? What followed next was Erin’s wish to recapture a sense of charity, and so she set out on her birthday to do one good deed every day for an entire year. Maybe she wouldn’t be saving orphans from burning buildings or raising enough money to erase the national debt, but she wanted to take one small, daily detour and make someone else’s life just a little bit better.

ONE GOOD DEED is the inspiring, smart, and frequently funny chronicle of a year when Erin tried to reclaim the better part of herself, with the hope of inspiring others to do the same.

One Good Deed… Because we can do a little better.

This episode is #23 of all time in the top 50 shows on Solutionz Live!

Andrew Watt, FInstF, is president and chief executive officer of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the professional association of individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for nonprofit organizations.

National Philanthropy Day, November 15, acknowledges the entire spectrum of services provided by the nonprofit community and recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society. And, each year AFP honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world.

What makes philanthropy so special is that no one is required to give of themselves. There are no national laws or regulations which mandate that you must volunteer or get involved. Philanthropy is so powerful and inspiring precisely because it is voluntary—that through the goodness of our hearts, through our need to connect, through our desire to see a better world, we come together to improve the quality of life for all people.

For 50 years, AFP has been the standard-bearer for professionalism in fundraising.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is the professional association of individuals and organizations that generate philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Founded in 1960, AFP advances philanthropy through its more than 30,000 members in 230 chapters throughout the world.

THE POWER TO CONFUSE: Using Search and Buying Online

Frequently I see complaints about consumers being confused about who they are doing business with online.   The culprits?  Those companies that truly have the power to confuse consumers and to truly baffle even the most savvy of marketers - the Search Engine giants.

I am in the travel industry and although the complaints are often about online hotel sites, I also see this in other categories as well.   It boils down to a fundamental lack of understanding about online retail and how many different retailers are authorized resellers of the same exact product.  The price for that product isn't always the same, although the hotel industry is really working on what is called "price parity".

Also I find that at the core of the consumer confusion is that consumers expect Google and Bing to always showcase the vendor's own website first and most prominently.  Consumers need to understand how these advertising giants work and that they are in business to make money, selling positioning on the search results. The ads are always clearly marked as Ads on both Bing and Google.

Here are three of my most popular blogs on this topic:

Though raised among foodies– her mother, a talented home entertainer, her banker father who single-handedly is credited for building the restaurant business in Boston; and a sister, now a chef and restaurateur–Kathy s route to food was not as linear.

In October of 2011, Kathy opened her newest venture, MET Back Bay, on the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Streets in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay.  MET Back Bay is housed in a landmark brownstone and features four separate dining areas including the Library, the Ham and Cheese Bar, the Dining Room, and the exclusive, members-only Townhouse.

Once a month she and her executive team along with Style Boston, a regional lifestyle television show, highlight food trends and New England hotspots. The show, 24 Hours with Kate airs on WCVB/ABC. The Met Team has traveled and filmed segments in Woodstock, Vermont, Portland, Maine, Providence, Rhode Island, New Haven, Connecticut and Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Her early life as a film producer developed her love for story, themes, and setting. But by age 47, she found herself drawn back to food and the risk of restaurant life. When I Met Food chronicles this adventure, from how she selected her first location to the careful branding decisions required to build a highly successful restaurant enterprise in metropolitan Boston. What began as a partnership between two entrepreneurs has grown into a community of people with a passion for fine jewelry and a commitment to change.  Beyond being conflict free, Brilliant Earth provides diamonds that are free from all types of violence, such as torture and rape committed by government militaries by tracking them from mine to market to ensure that they are mined, cut, and polished in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Their overall objective is to invest in long-term community development in regions that can support a self-sustaining jewelry-based economy. To achieve this, they combine best practices in the jewelry trade with research-based funding efforts. Their ongoing initiatives help shape a rewarding and self-sufficient future for families who depend on the jewelry trade.

Brilliant Earth dedicates 5% of its profits to directly benefit local African communities harmed by the diamond industry.

Porter Gale is an internationally known public speaker, networker, and entrepreneur with more than twenty years of experience working in marketing, advertising, and independent filmmaking.

This episode is #14 of all time on Solutionz Live with almost 2000 downloads.

Networking doesn’t have to be that frenzied old-school game of calendars packed with stuffy power lunches and sterile evenings at community business gatherings. We’ve entered a new era, one in which shifting cultural values and the explosion of digital technology enable us to network in vastly more efficient, more focused, and more enjoyable ways.

Your Network Is Your Net Worth is both a primer and a storybook, an entertaining, straightforward guide filled with revealing case studies, hands-on advice, and innovative strategies for building your network.

Gale shares the inspiring stories of so many others who live by this networking model: a military wife who connects with social media communities while her husband is deployed overseas, a young woman blogger battling leukemia, a dyslexic politician who wins elections by telling stories, and the CEO of a Major League Baseball team who once made a phone call that changed the course of his life.
From 2007 to 2011, Porter was Vice President of Marketing at Virgin America. She is also a blogger for AdAge and The Huffington Post.

Put on your Jetpack and escape status quo - 10 of 10 Einstein LIfe Hacks

The last Einstein quote that I've selected for this series (pardon the one week break) is this:

A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.

I have been busy being clever. Very clever in fact. And I used to think clever was good, until I read this quote on @AlbertE_Quotes on Twitter.

I have made my living for the past 18 years running a strategic consulting firm known as Solutionz.  We solve problems for people.  And after nearly two decades the light now comes on.  I should have been helping them avoid problems, not solving them.

When you are simply a problem solver, people come to you, get their problem solved and then they are gone, off to the next thing.  That is, until something else breaks, and then they call you again.

While lucrative, this could be why I finally decided to focus on building things (companies, technologies) for myself.  While it can be a tad painful to self-fund your dreams, it is way more satisfying.

The rest of my industry [the travel industry] is trying to figure out how to keep making money in a very crowded, commoditized space.  They are trying to solve the problem of how to have a sustainable business where each day more and more companies are entering their space and at the same time, the product suppliers (airlines and hotels as the prime vendors) are trying to sell directly to the customer, the traveler.

I recently discovered this clever cartoonist, Reza Farazmand, who takes simple concepts and puts them into humor.   Sort of a happier version of Dilbert (if you can ignore the uncensored language in some of his work).

http://poorlydrawnlines.com/

I had to actually look at this cartoon, entitled Jetpack, a few times.  The first time, I was in the "head" of the girl, thinking he needed to stay and work things out.  Since I am a girl, that was the natural thing to do.

Then, I thought about it from a business perspective and thought of the dialogue that goes on every day in my industry about the status quo.

Let me give you a tangible example.  After 34 years of automation in the travel industry, the largest companies in the industry, known as Global Distribution System companies (or GDS), are still focused on air travel.  I had to laugh in a recent move by Travelport to "rebrand", they decided to make a change from calling their hotel, car and ancillary products group "non-air" to "beyond air".    If they were really moving beyond air, they would change their product focus from the air traveler to those that drive (who make up 85 percent of all trips in this country).  It is this kind of thinking that 34 years into it, still has them 90% dependent on airlines for their revenues.

So back to Reza's cartoon.  In that dialogue, I am the boy with the jetpack.

Stay tuned for the launch of our new product on the 1st of July that will take us not only way "beyond air" but will actually help travelers plan their trips to where they really need to be.

I totally can and it will in fact be AWESOME!!   Thanks @

Investing isn't a man's world anymore—and that's a good thing for individual portfolios, Wall Street, and the world's financial system.
Warren Buffett and the women of the world have one thing in common: They are better investors than the average man. Psychologists and scientists have shown that women have the kind of temperaments that help them achieve long-term success in the market.
This book shows that women, with their patience and good decision making, epitomize the Foolish investment philosophy, as well as the investment temperament of the most successful investor in history: Warren Buffett.

LouAnn Lofton has been proudly investing "like a girl" since she was a girl. After losing her father at age 14, she resolved to take control of her own financial future and became obsessed with learning how to invest. Her quest led her to Warren Buffett in 1994 and The Motley Fool in 2000, where she rose to the position of managing editor of Fool.com. The book allowed her to finally meet her investment idol.

You know your blog is effective when Einstein follows you on Twitter

Now intellectually I know that Albert Einstein is dead and he is not really following me on Twitter.

But it is a great sign that my blog is effective that the person that posts Einstein quotes regularly is paying attention to my Einstein Life Hacks series.

In fact, he/she has provided me some new material, as the ten items that I was working from actually had a duplicate (same topic, different quote), so I was going to have to search for a new quote for Monday's blog.  Thanks to whoever runs the @AlbertE_Quotes Twitter account!

Stay tuned.

Lessons from Disney

I realized today that I didn't finish my series on Einstein before leaving for a few days to go to Disney with my 16 year old daughter.

Three parks, two times on Splash Mountain, two times on the Rockin Roller Coaster, two times on Space Mountain and 22,168 steps later (tracked with my Steps app), I learned that it is much more fun to go to the Disney World parks with a teenager than when they are young.  No tears, no pushing a stroller or carrying a sleeping child.

Oh, when they are young they are innocent and see everything at face value and there is something to be said about that.  I even caught my daughter reaching out to touch Aladdin's flying rug in the 3D movie the other day.

But when they are older, you can have a very different dialogue about things.  My daughter now understands the economics of Epcot and that without Chevrolet, Siemens and the like, you wouldn't have all the amazing displays.  And she understands that Starbucks pays for the privilege of being the coffee served in the parks now.

And instead of complaining about the long lines, she is busy posting pictures on Instagram for her friends so that they can enjoy the parks right along with her.  I'm totally fine with that, as I did my fair share of posting on Facebook and checking in on Foursquare.

We did get stuck on a couple of rides.  One was in the big geodesic dome at Epcot, on the way down from the top.  Fortunately since we were going down backwards, it didn't last long.  And ironically, we got stuck on GE's Carousel of Progress.

.....It's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day.....

Lessons learned?
  • Comfortable shoes are a must and even if they look comfortable, if you aren't used to them, don't wear them.
  • Get a big bottle of water and refill it at every opportunity
  • A small backpack is a must - sunscreen, sunglasses and big enough for your water bottle
  • Enjoy every minute.  They grow up WAY too fast.
Monday I will be back to finish the series and will come up with something new to write about.

Stay tuned.

The CIO Paradox: Battling the Contradictions of IT Leadership- an EGG Live! interview with Martha Heller

This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series called EGG Live! Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Martha Heller. The original live interview was 10/12/12.

Martha Heller and her team at Heller Search Associates specialize in recruiting CIOs and other IT executives across multiple industri

This is the 5th most popular show of all time on Solutionz Live! with almost 3000 downloads.

Regardless of industry, most major companies are becoming technology companies. The successful management of information has become so critical to a company’s goals, that in many ways, now is the age of the CIO. Yet IT executives are besieged by a host of contradictions: bad technology can bring a company to its knees, but corporate boards rarely employ CIOs; CIOs must keep costs down at the very same time that they drive innovation.

CIOs are focused on the future, while they are tethered by technology decisions made in the past. These contradictions form what Martha Heller calls The CIO Paradox, a set of conflicting forces that are deeply embedded in governance, staffing, executive expectations, and even corporate culture.
Heller, who has spent more than 12 years working with the CIO community, offers guidance to CIOs on how to attack, reverse, or neutralize the paradoxical elements of the CIO role.

Martha and her team at Heller Search Associates specialize in recruiting CIOs and other IT executives across multiple industries. Prior to founding Heller Search, Martha was Managing Director of the IT Leadership Practice at ZRG Partners, a global executive search firm.

Martha received her B.A. in English from Hamilton College and her M.A. in English from SUNY Stony Brook. Martha lives near Boston with her husband, two children and two dogs.

Focus on what counts - 9 of 10 Einstein Life Hacks

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) first visited Princeton in 1921 -- the year before he received the Nobel Prize.

Einstein was said to have had this sign hanging in his office at Princeton.

The sentiment is really this.  You need to focus on what counts.

While it is important to measure things, there are many things, such as integrity in business that cannot actually be counted.   And there are many things that are measured that aren't really important.

In business, what gets measured, gets accomplished.  And what gets rewarded, gets repeated.

Make sure to focus on the things that really count.  Find a way to measure those and reward those things, so that they will get repeated.

Israel has now topped the stats!

Out of nowhere, the Israelis have discovered the Solutionz Think Tank.  Two days this past week they have been the number one viewers of my blog, with over 1,000 views.

Most people know that there are more entrepreneurs per capita in Israel than any other country on earth.

So now those entrepreneurs are a little more fearless than they were before they visited my blog.  Or perhaps they are fascinated with Einstein.

Either way, welcome.     ברוך הבא

Play Better - 8 of 10 Einstein Life Hacks

One of Einsteins life rules (aka life hacks) was:

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

My son Sergey left yesterday for Panama on a sports mission trip for his school, Cambridge Christian in Tampa.

While he isn't on the school's basketball team, that is the sport that they are focusing on this week.

I guarantee that he knows the rules of the game.  He used to play on a YMCA league.

If you look closely in this photo, he is the little one right under the basket in red, with the yellow shoes on.

What Sergey knows is that you don't have to be tall to play basketball.  Oh, no doubt about it, it gives you an obvious advantage.

But he has learned is that it is really important to be fast, stealing the ball before anyone realizes that you have it and sprinting down and hitting the three point shot.  In Sergey's case, that is the move that he has mastered and he does it better than anyone else.

What game are you playing?  What is it that you do better than anyone else?
